The original negatives of the images were taken in my third year of university using 3200 ISO film. Over a period of 11 years I would revisit these images, blow up certain details, work on them with iodine, print them and then rephotograph them. The process was always one of magnification and peering into the image in order to try to distill a source, a gesture, a tilt of the head. Eventually the grain of the film took on a significance of its own and began to resemble the microscopic world of cells and ‘atoms’ and at the same time, the images of the vast expanses of our universe which I continued to explore through ink and pastel drawings.
